Henry Wu aka Kamaal Williams est originaire du South London, aux alentours de Peckham comme beaucoup d’artistes. Né d’une mère d’origine chinoise, Kamaal Williams emprunte le nom de sa mere pour son nom de scène et devient Henry Wu. Jeune, il compose avec des amis de quartier un groupe de Jazz avant de proposer une musique hybride rare groove, jazz fusion, broken beat et deep house propre au sud de Londres avec son don aux claviers. Ce dernier se révèle en proposant deux EPs en 2014 « Natural Complexion » avec un titre en collaboration avec Tenderlonious fondateur de 22a, puis un split album avec Jeen Bassa de la fraterie Deenmamode (Mo Kolours, Reginald Mamode IV) chez 22a justement.
Il signe ensuite chez Rhythmn Section International, pour Good Morning Peckham, un EP mêlant sonorités Jazz/Funk à la deep-house. Il collabore cette même année avec K15 et forme WU15 pour une release chez Eglo. Kamaal dévoile cette même année « Negociate EP », l’un de ses EPs les plus aboutis avec la participation de Mo Kolours, Tom Driessler et Simeon Jones entre autre. Bref, une belle année !
2016 sera la consécration avec tout d’abord un EP en collaboration avec Tito Wun aka Twit One, pour 27 Karat Years et enfin le projet Yussef Kamaal live et album. Ce groupe live monté par le duo Yussef Dayes aux drums et Kamaal Williams (Wu) aux keybords est l’une des révélation de l’année. Ils sortent ensemble « Black Focus », album enregistré en seulement deux semaines composé par certaines reprises de titres d’Henry Wu comme Joint17. Ce mélange de Jazz, de Funk, et de house est une petite merveille. Mais malheureusement pour des raisons inconnues, les deux artistes se sont séparés et continuent leurs tournées séparément. Prochain projet? Le label Black Focus devrait voir les jours dans les semaines à venir…

Henry Wu aka Kamaal Williams comes from South London near Peckham. Kamaal Williams uses his mother’s name to create his artist name Henry Wu. Younger, he founded a jazz band with his friends before moving to more hybrid and characteristic sounds of South London combining rare groove, broken beat and deep house. He reveals his talent releasing 2 EP in 2014 : Natural Complexion including a featuring with 22a label’s founder Tenderlonious, and a split album collaborating with Deenamode’s family member Jeen Bassa on 22a.
He then signed on Rhythmn Section International releasing Good Morning Peckham EP mixing jazz/funk and deep house tracks. the same year he worked with K15 to form WU15 on Eglo Records and also bring his EP NEGOCIATE.
2016 is the year of recognition ! First his EP in collaboration with Tito Wun aka Twit One ’27 Karat Years’ came out and finally Yussef Kamaal project. This live band with Yussef Dayes on the drum and Kamaal (Wu) on keyboard is one of the revelation of the year. They released together ‘Black Focus’ album which was recorded in only 2 weeks. This album includes original tracks but also some of Wu’s tracks like Joint17. This lovely combination of Jazz, Funk, and house is a real little gem ! Unfortunately the duo splits for unkown reasons and they both continue their tour separately. Next project ? the Black focus label should come to life soon.
